About The Director: Jeff Cayer

Jeff Cayer has been the director of bands at Southwest Middle School since 1995.  Mr. Cayer’s programs have regularly earned superior rating at Concert and Jazz Band Music Performance Assessments.  His program consists of beginning bands in 6th through 8th grades, Concert Band, Symphonic Bands and Jazz Bands.  He was recognized as Southwest Middle School’s Teacher of the Year in 1999 and earned the Chris Keehn  “Spirit of Teaching” Award in 2007.  The Jazz Bands, under his direction has performed, by invitation for many Senators, Congressmen and on two occasions for George W. Bush.  In addition to his middle school program, Mr. Cayer is on staff with the Lakeland High School Dreadnaught Band.

In 1995, Mr. Cayer earned his Bachelor of Music Education Degree as a saxophone major at Florida Southern College.  He has maintained a full studio of individual saxophone students, many who earned seats in the Florida All State Bands.  He also served as the Florida Bandmasters Association Jazz Band Chairman and a member of the FBA Clinics Committee.  Jeff currently serves as an adjudicator and clinician around the state of Florida.  He is an active member of the Florida Bandmasters Association, Music Educators National Conference, Florida Music Educators Association, Pih Beta Mu and American School Band Director’s Association.

Jeff’s wife, Jennifer has taught elementary school since 1993 and they have two daughters, Denise and Ashley.
